Wengenroth’s work, almost exclusively in black and white, used light and shadow to convey nuance and detail in his depictions of pastoral New England settings. Throughout his career, he returned repeatedly to the forests, fishing villages, and rugged coastline of Maine in search of subjects for his lithographs. He would take long walks in nature, seeking out settings that spoke to him, and sketching them. He was a keen surveyor of nature and captured the essence of his scenes.
