Artist Robert Pulley grew up in Indiana, where frequent solitary walks in the woods and along the water left lasting impressions on his mind of various forms, colors, and textures. These impressions would go on to inspire his art and what he calls “a balance between natural wildness and control.” His sculptures typically refer to the human figure as well as geology and nature in general. He uses stream of consciousness techniques to create sketches, choosing which ones will be final sculptures. "Ironwood" is a general term applied to numerous types of trees and shrubs that produce incredibly tough wood, making them difficult to cut or carve. The form seen here seems to reference the human figure, its colors representing worn earth and its title suggesting strength.
