In "Pond in the Woods," Schrag depicted a forest using bold, black strokes and highlights of bright pale yellow, and a bright pink sky. The emphasis in the work is on the frenzied line that Schrag used to convey the trees, bushes, and grass. In the foreground, there is a blue pond which reflects the bright pinks, purples, and yellows featured in the landscape. He frequently mixed complementary and contrasting colors to create vibrancy and emotional impact, and to create a sense of energy in his works. The work features a halo-like effect of sunlight above the trees, emanating a wondrous effect and giving us a sense of the amazement that Schrag felt in nature. The strong use of line, bright colors, and busy composition allow the scene to feel energetic, as if it’s coming alive. According to Schrag, “My strong desire to express from sunlit serenity to the darkest moods has its roots in a constant awareness of myself being a part of the nature and life which I observe. With every breath I take, with every heartbeat I feel within myself the rhythms of nature.”
