Williams’ work is inspired by Color Field painting, and done on irregularly shaped canvases. Color Field painting is characterized by large fi elds of flat, solid color, emphasizing painting’s basic properties. Early (1940s) Color Field painters were searching for a style of abstraction that would express transcendence and the infi nite, while later painters stressed form over spiritual content.
