Don Pilcher was an expert at glaze chemistry and firing technology. In his work, there is an emphasis on the craft element of potting, technical expertise, attention to detail, and endless experimentation. Many of his works are distortions, such as this bowl that features a wavy rim. He also experimented with glazes, and his most used surface treatments include lead glaze, salt glaze, slips, overglaze, underglaze, luster glazes, volcanic glazes, oxidation, reduction, sandblasting, single firings, multiple firings, and intentional over firings. This Untitled bowl exemplifies a cracked glaze that resulted in white bubble-looking forms protruding from the black background glaze.
