"Western Mountains" sits at an important moment in Dodd's career. It was painted in 1972, the same year he retired from the University of Georgia after more than three decades as department chair, just before he entered his intensely experimental period that resulted in his Heart Series. It reflects many of the stylistic developments that had occupied him since the 1950s.
The title suggests a mountainous region in the American West, but without additional documentation it is difficult to identify the exact location. Dodd traveled extensively throughout the United States and Europe during the latter half of his career, and many of his landscapes synthesized observations from multiple places rather than depicting a single identifiable view.
Rather than documenting a specific location, the watercolor conveys the shifting light, movement, and underlying structure of the mountainous terrain, reflecting the increasingly expressive approach that characterized Dodd's work during the final decades of his career.
