Description

Ft. Steele, 1886. Update May 2010: Black & white glossy print. Image shows a long, horizontal dark colored wooden building adjacent to railroad tracks. Shingled roof has twin chimneys, one left & one right with a center vent pipe between them. A narrow, long sign is attached to wall of building front under eaves of roof. White lettering on dark background reads at left to Omaha. 605 miles with arrow pointing left. Fort Fred Steele in the middle & to Ogden 337 1/2 miles at right with arrow pointing right. Several men are standing & sitting on chairs on platform side left; a woman with three children are standing at side right on platform with a U.S. Cavalry Corporal soldier (in uniform) standing at far right). A closed garage looking door is seen at side left of building. There are three doors & three windows to this building. Open door at side left has sign over doorway: Pacific Express Co. Lower edge of image has U.P. Depot - Ft. Steele Wyo printed in script from negative process. Written on back in black ink: "1886. Written on back on tiny white tag: "Ft. Steele" Written on back in blue pencil: "8-76". Good condition. Various creases & bends in emulsion. There are two horizontal indentions to surface; one at top & one at lower edge. These indentions extend left to right across entire print. A white developing line is seen at side left. Minor yellowing on backside - side edges. Update February 2011: One black & white glossy contact print. Written on back in pencil: "Ft. Steele 1886" Good condition. Slight creasing, irregular emulsion. Size 6 3/4 x 10"
