Description

A royal blue three ring binder used as a photograph album with some clippings. Measures 11 3/8" x 10 1/4" x 1 3/4" thick. Album has a tiny square white sticker on the upper spine with the #15 printed on it in black ink. Book is composed of sections with tab dividers labeled: smelter, Ferris Haggerty, Dilliion (sic) [Dillon], Encampment, and Battle. Photos and articles cover 1900-1953. The collection begins with 5 pages bearing 12 photos of the (Leighton?) Smelter, and its surrounding area. Photos taken from 1948-1956. (Mine House over smelter Mine, and Independence Mine, furnace at smelter photographs.) There are two maps of the Leighton-Wyoming Mining Company holdings in the Encampment Mining District, South East of the Smelter. One map is hand drawn and the other (incomplete) is printed, both dated 1907. (On the back of the second page are similar photos of a poorly balanced stagecoach-the front wheels are too small. The top photo is a colored postcard made in Germany marked, "A Wyoming Stage," no date or location given. The site may have been turn of the century Walcott. Followed by a newpaper photo of the Penn-Wyoming Smelter and Tram. Black and white photographs of Battle, WY 1904-1905 and 1953. Ferris-Haggarty Mine of the Penn-WY Copper Co., Dillon, WY; Rudefeha Mine 1904-1908 during boom and 1953 remains. Booklet entitled, Long Distance Transportation of Ores by Aerial Wire Rope Tramways, by A. Leschen and Sons Rope Co., 1904. Clippings on the tramway and 2 1/2 pages of Wy State geologist, Henry C. Beeler entitled Progress in WYoming Mines, 1907. Prints of houses for employees left standing in 1953 of Ferris Haggarty Mines. (L. P. Larsen on porch); newspaper clipping of same photo; print of road to Saratoga coming down the West side of the divide to Ferris Haggarty Mines. Newspaper clipping photo of 1907 "van lines," (two teams of the Penn-Wyo Copper Co. hauling freight and ore.); print of L. P. Larsen in old Powder House doorway; Clippings on life in the Sierra Madres mining districts; letter from Helen Latham to her husband, a mine developer, dated 08/04/1910, note explains the letter was found by Larsens 08/12/1956 in a shed at the mines. Latham abandoned after less than a years work. Photos of Bill Stockey, Ray Ferris and Lewie (sic) Nielsen (sic) [Lou Nelson]. Encampment section of album contains clippings of stage coach leaving New Bohn Hotel, historical newspaper articles; Merritt D. Houghton fold out map of drainage and towns of Grand Encampment Mining Districts, Sierra Madre Mountain Range, includes Dillon and Ferris Haggarty Mines, measures 9 1/2" x 22 1/2" when unfolded. Shows route of Saratoga and Walcott Stage Line and the tramway; photo post cards of Scribners Famous Six white horse team in front of the Hotel Wolf, Saratoga (small wheels in front, and large wheels in back on stage coach) and Ore Team on Bridge, Encampment, 1906; two copies of the Grand Encampment Herald, dated Jan. 1, 1904, No. 42 and Aug. 14, 1908, No. 22. Both extol Encampment's potential. The 1908 issue is more history oriented. Both are good condition, but are glued into a binder page and folded to fit in. Book is in good condition with minor soiling and scuffing of outside cover. There is some yellowing of inside pages. There are two photographs that are mounted on dark matboard that are loose in this album, and they have been removed and placed in the photograph files under number 1957.284.0119 (overage). Print 1 measures 7" x 8 3/4" and is a black and white print affixed to dark gray matboard. Image is of Dillon, WY street scene with rocky road in foreground and wooden structures on either side of the roadway. A large group of men are huddled at the street end with their backs to camera. One man is on horseback with this group. a wagon and team is parked on side left by wooden fence. Dillon Hotel on left and Restaurant on side right. ca. 1900. Hill with trees in background. Good condition, but there is a small black circle stain on top center of print. Print 2 is a black and white image affixed to dark gray matboard. It measures 6 7/8" x 9." Image is of a white A-frame two story building with a group of men and boys standing in front of the building with a A-frame entryway alcove type room on front of building with long windows on either side of the doorway. There are several evergreen trees at the building corners and a smaller one to side right of doorway. A U. S. Flag flies from a pole attached to roof at its front apex. A circular logo is painted under the v of the roof front of building. White lettered sign is painted on the building under the logo: Dillon Miners Union No. 189. A large gas type street lamp is at front corner right of image. Good condition with minor soiling including a small dark spec on print front.
