Description

15 1/4" wide by 12" tall black and white (more brown and white) photograph on a 20"X16" board. Previously in a wooden frame with "#48" written in pencil on the back, but frame was in poor shape and was removed at accessioning. Photograph shows a man and three women having a picnic. They appear to be at the edge of a field, with trees some distance behind them and immediately to their right, and grass beneth and to their left. All four are seated on a blanket with food in jars, spread on paper bags, in a can, in in a box spread between them. A package of crackers is at the bottom, closest to the camera. The woman on the left has a single colored blanket over her lap as she sits, leaning forward, over her bent legs before her. She has a dark skirt or pants just barely visible above the blanket, a white blouse, and a large darkly colored bow around her neck. Her hair is up, under a feathered hat. She is taking a bit of something (bread?) held in her right hand, with her left hand around her knees. She looks at the woman across from her, and is the only one not looking at the camera The man is seated to her left, further away from the camera. He has his legs sprawled before him, and is wearing an unbuttoned vest over his white shirt and patterned, askew tie. He has a brimmed hat, and is pointing to one of the women to his left and smiles to the camera. The woman on the right, further back, is seated cross-legged in a dark skirt, with a slightly lighter blouse. She has a large hat and is holding a small piece of food to her mouth with her left hand. A newspaper leans against her left leg. The woman on the right, further forward, is laying back with her legs out towards the camera and her upper body propped on her right arm. She wears a dark dress with white lace around the collar, and no hat. A blanket covers her legs, with one pointy boot sticking out. She holds a small cup in her left hand. She smirks, more than smiles, at the camera. The blanket across her lap is a single color but with stripes (of stitching?) in 5 bands around the outside. The picture has a few discolorations but is generally in good shape. There are light scrapes/markings on the backing board, and several dents in the back of the backing board from the anchors of the former frame.
