Description

One black and white print and one sepia print. Snapshot. Black and white print. Snapshot. Image of a large group of women in white, red cross nursing smocks and hats posed on the steps of a large stone building. Some of the women are on the two-story columned porch of the building. Many of the women are holding American and Red Cross Flags. A large Red Cross is held at top of steps and two banners-one on each side-are held by women on the porch. Banner at left: "Garment + W[orkers]". Banner at right : " [Surgi]cal and Dressings." This is thhe Elks Lodge (BPOE) building in Rawlins, WY. Same image as 1949.055.0001. 1. Black and white print 7 5/8 x 9 3/4". Written in blue ink on emulsion surface: [over woman at right front] "Mrs. Barber" [crossed out and replaced with] "Hadsell". Written on emulsion in pencil at center bottom: "1923". Written on back in blue ink: "Red Cross Chapter Front Row-left-Mrs. Raymond Barber-chairman sewing & Garment Mrs. Gertrude H. Merrell chairman Red Cross-Right-Miss Stella Jungquist-secretary. Lower right corner missing large piece. Upper & lower left corners bent-emulsion cracked. Tan paper and adhesive residue around edges on back; impacting emulsion on front with bulges around edges. Tape on back at center of top edge. Back yellowed and soiled. Emulsion cracked near center bottom; soiled and scratched. 2. Sepia print. 7 7/8 x 9 7/8". Written on back in pencil: "1st Row standing left to rt. Hadsell, Merrill [sic], heath, Barber." "Red Cross unit, First World War, 1918(?) Elks Club, Rawlins, Wy." Black paper and adhesive residue on back in left corners and lower right; light adhesive around all edges. Back soiled. Corner damage-emulsion cracked in all corners. Image surface soiled. Dark areas silvering.
