William J. Johnston. Friend to the Shoshone. Three copies.
Update 1/2008: Black and white print. Studio portrait. Mounted on tan matboard with gold colors. Image of a man dressed with fringed buckskins, hat and moccasin and holding the barrel of a rifle. Painted backdrop in background. Chair(?) covered with buffalo hide at left. Other hides underfoot. Rifle is positioned with butt on floor in front of man. He is holding barrel with his right hand and resting his left wrist on the mouth. At his waist he is wearing a beaded leather pipe bag with long fringe, a smaller beaded bad with tinklers along bottom edge and a long bead and tingler tassel. White splotch on backdrop or original negative to right of head.

Written on back in pencil: "William J. Johnston, Photographer and brother of Mrs.. Schalk. A great friend of Chief Washakie [added in blue ink] of the Shoshones." "5"

Copy condition: Strip of double sided tape on back at top center. Torn on upper edge to right of center; torn on upper left side. Upper right corner bend, emulsion cracked. Wrinkled and bent throughout.
Original: Edge and corner damage-lower right and upper left corners bent. Upper left corner missing on image. Soiled front and back. Image surface dented, scuffed and scratched. Fingerprints on emulsion surface in upper left and center right. Mat slightly warped.Collection
