Description

George Baker at age 19 years in Nebraska. Working with a bridge gang on Burlington Railroad. Two copies. Update 1/2008: Sepia print. Mounted on tan matboard. Image of a group of workmen posed on either side of a cut in a hill. One man and a dog are on a rock laden wagon overhead on a wood bridge spanning the gap. Six men and a dog standing on hind legs are at left on a rock stair wall. Another five men are at right on a rock stair wall. Trees can be seen through the gap. The bottom of the cut has water in it. Written in blue ink on the emulsion surface at the feet of the man in front row at right: "Geo Baker" with an arrow pointing to his left ankle. All men are in work clothes and wearing hats. Man at left front with dog is wearing a three-piece suit. Written in blue ink in top margin on mat: "George Baker at 19 yrs of age in Nebraska working with a bridge gang on Burlington RR-". Written in blue in bottom margin on mat: "Given by George Baker Encampment Wyo." Written on back in black ink: "Envelope Baker" "copied". Written on back in pencil : "4". Two 4 7/8 x 3 1/2 copy prints. 1. Written on the back in black ink: "George Baker at 19 years of age in Nebraska working with a bridge gang on Burlington RR." "Geo Baker" 2. Written on the back in black ink: "George Baker at 19 yr. old" "14". Original mounted on acidic matboard. Mat is broken and missing large pieces in upper left and lower right; cracked at center bottom edge. Damage to remaining corners and edges; bent at image edge along left side. Badly soiled and stained. Liquid damage front and back. Image missing lower left corner and piece from lower left edge .Emulsion cracked in upper right corner, lower right corner loose and bent. Emulsion surface badly scuffed and scratched. Pieces of surface missing at left center. Third 4 7/8 x 3 1/2" Black & white copy print.
