Black & white print on black mat of a woman wearing a white blouse with pleats, high collar, neck & buttons down front. She has on a long necklace & wears a brooch on collar & pin on right near collar bone. Her hat is quite large & is round, stands away from her head & is ribbed on sides. On top are swirls of silky looking fabric with a feather & decoration on photo left side.
Written on back in black: "E Stewart - a cousin of John Buchanan. She came to live with them in Rawlins from Nova Scotia. Her husband had gone west a few years before with all their worldly goods in his pocket. He was never seen again. He was either robbed & murdered or was looking for a new identity. No one will ever know. She was a very skilled taylor[sic tailor] & worked with John when he & his brothers had the clothing store. Murphy-Readys on Front street"
Writing is on white strips on paper glued to back of mat.
Good condition. Mat cut down, silvering, print bubbled off mat in several places.Collection
