Scope and Content

A black plastic coated hard cover three ring binder used as a scrapbook. Book has a tiny white sticker on the upper spine with the number 11 written in black ink. Inside front cover has two tiny stickers, one at top has H. L. Minerals 1 R written in black ink; tiny (torn) sticker at side left has Minerals, H. L. #1-R written in blue ink. The binder itself measures 11 1/2" x 10 1/2." Both the donor and his father, Hans, contributed to the collection of letters, contracts, leases, plans and cost sheets contained in the book. The first 13 pages deal with the limestone lime clays, lime magnesium, and lime kilns and locations of the Larsen Quarry location leases; covers periods 1894-1942. Next is a single page of an assay from 1923 on semi anthracite coal, the mine was 27 miles west of Rawlins on Union Pacific and U. S. Government Land in Sweetwater County. (Supposedly superior to other area coals.) Next is a chemical analysis of Alabaster gypsum, 50-60 miles northeast of Rawlins, (not worth developing in 1923). Next articles on "glass sand" silica good for making glass. (Larsens had good sources of it in the Spring and summer of 1923. Union Pacific did not find it good for glass and Hans was trying to get their help in developing the sites and nothing happened). Next a letter from 1906 concerning soda which was found in the Bairoil area. Next 8 pages deal with the Caustic Soda (alkali) and Larsen Limestone lease on which the soda was found. Papers cover 1906-1909. H. Larsen and the Western Alkali Co. of Green River cancelled their leases. Next: Sodium Sulphate and mirabilite, 1920-1931. Several pages show plans for building a sheep wagon, box and cover, includes itemized costs of all products and materials used in building the wagon in 1923 and 1929. Documents relating to the building of the north-south railroad from Steamboat Springs, CO to Lander, WY. (such routes were of great interest to Hans in the 20's). Last 5 pages concern oil shale; promotions of the firm, Continental Oil Shale, Mining and Refining Co, 1918. Good condition with some fading and wear of cover. Minor blemishes on top cover. There are two small holes in the top cover at center edge. Some of the letters and documents are yellowing and stained.
