Description

Soldiers at Ft. Steele in the 1870's with a pet elk and the railroad tracks going through. Three copies. Update 2009: Black and white print 8x10 with 2 copies 3 1/2 x 5 1/8 each of Fort Steele. Print has a railroad track in foreground with three soldiers in uniform lounging on ground by tracks. A large elk with horns and a man next to animal is seen in center with electrical pole behind them. Large buildings are seen side left and rear of photo with large mesa rising in the far background. Photo does not cover entire photo paper at bottom edge showing a 2 1/2 " white space across bottom edge of print. Written on back in blue ink: Fort Steele looking North. Note original hewn ties. During military occupancy. E.M.Tierney written in black ink. Tiny sticker with #3901. Stamped in black ink: Copy provided by the Wy. State Archives & Historical Dept. #2.00. Copy I: Written in black ink on back: Soldiers at Ft. Steele in the 1870's, their pet elk. Page 20-no. 4. Copy 2: Written in black ink on back: Looking North, note original hewn ties. Page 20, No.5.
