Description

A "short-globe" brakeman's lantern, used by workers on the Union Pacific Railroad to give signals to trains. The lantern consists of a metal cage surrounding a red glass fresnel-style globe, which contains a flat wick supported by metal with a fuel reservoir underneath. The flat top of the ventilation hood reads "Adlake, Kero." around the outside, with "UP. RR" embossed on the lower brim. The bottom of the lantern is also marked "Adlake, Kero 4-56, Patented". It likely burns kerosene. It has a looped wire handle for being hung or carried by hand. Edit 2015: Previously given number T1861.
