Description

Front Street before the Railroad, Rawlins. Update - January 2010: Black & white print attached to ivory colored matboard which has been cut off. Image shows an early day town site with multiple sized wooden frame & log buildings in a long row. A large barren hill is in the distance side left. A very tall pole is seen at street edge at center of print. Names of the businesses read: L to r in near foreground: Dry Goods; Hardware; City Restaurant; G. W. Hugus & Co; J. W. Hugus Company; Bankers General Groceries. The foreground depicts an uneven road composed of dirt & strewn unknown objects. Barrels are lying next to the tall pole at base. Area is from 3rd Street of North Front to 9th Street. Date is post 1883. Printed on front of print in black ink: Front Street before the railroad (Note this is erroneous information. There was nothing here before the railroad came) Written on back in pencil: Rawlins business houses Poor condition. Print has large unknown residue on left side of image. Image is highly soiled with smudges & tiny black specks. There area areas of lifted emulsion exposing white paper. Print is lifting from matboard at sides & bottom. Back surface of mat is torn away.
