File: Blizzard of 1949 and Buildings. B/W photographs. a-b) Shows a building with a vintage car parked in front and a huge snowbank to the right and in the background. Written on back of a: "West side of Bucking Horse Lodge." c-d) Rawlins Bucking Horse Motel with a snowbank to the rooftop on the left. Written on back of c: "This motel is just west of Ideal--this is the east side of it." e-f) Image of downtown Rawlins, a snowy Cedar Street, ca. 1949. and looking east with the Presbyterian Church in the background, side right. Other businesses on the right include: J. C. Penney Co., Range Cafe, and Harris Jewelers. Businesses on the left side: Federal Savings and Loan, Drugstore, and Cafe. A stop light hangs at intersection. Vintage cars are paralleled parked along curbs and a car is approaching the intersection. Written on back of f: "Main Street-notice the blowing snow in the background." g) Image similar to e and f, but taken a few feet further east on Cedar Street. Federal Savings and Loan is seen at side left and Brighten Up Shop is seen at side right. h) Two large transport airplanes sitting on dirt airfield. Written on back: "haylift." During the blizzard of 1949 transport planes were used to carry hay to stranded livestock. It was called Operation Haylift. i) Unknown man wearing jeans and long sleeved white shirt standing to side rear of a stock truck with two men loading hay in the truck. An open hatch to the side of the plane is see with a man reaching for hay. The side door of a plane is opened to the rear of the truck to facilitate loading the hay from the plane. n-o) A high pile of snow with a few reputably in the back ground. A row of dormant trees is behind the cabins. Written on back of n: "Ideal Motel." p-q) A large, high pile of snow in front of a building whose eaves and roofline are showing. Three dormant tall trees are behind the structure. Written on back of q: "Ideal Motel-where we stayed the first time we came to Rawlins." r) 3"x 3.5" snapshot of a line of rooftops with banks of snow in front. Dormant trees are behind the buildings. An evergreen tree is at side right. s) Same as above, but sized like others. Written on back: "Ideal Motel-last row of cabins on the the west." t) A snowbank in front of a motel with only the peaks of the roofs showing.
