Description

Patnoe wreck, Engine 1644, Sept. 27, 1902. Update - June 2010: Sepia print. Snapshot. Mounted on grey matboard. Image of the aftermath of a train wreck showing a jumble of wrecked boxcars. Most intact boxcar has "Continental Fruit" printed on the side. Three men on top of crumpled car at right. Three more men at left - one was moving & is a blur. Written on back in blue ink: "3l(1)" "The pictures - 3l (2) (2) (3) are of the Charles Patnoe Wreck in the West Rawlins yards on Sept 27, 1902. a special fruit train got away from the control of the engineer. When the air brakes failed & collided with a switch engine & cars it was moving; killed were the engineer, Charles Patnoe; the firemen James Welch; a man identified as Paul Dayton, & another unidentified man. Three cars of sheep, three cars of potatoes, a car of ore, the caboose & several cars of fruit were burned. Written on back: [black ink] "copied by state mounted" [pencil] "5252" [light blue ink] "1" [red pencil] "page 17,l pix 1 2 5/8 x 5". Mounted on acidic matboard. Cut down from original size - edges rough &uneven. Mat back has been removed to expose inner core. Image surface soiled & scratched.
