Description

Black and white stereograph. Imagie is of a large waterfall, a small boat can be seen in the waters below. Below the image "The World's grandest Waterfall - Niagara, from Prospect point, U.S.A. Copyright 1901 by Underwood and Underwood" is printed. To the left of the image "Underwood & Underwood Publishers New York. London. Toronto-Canada. Ottawa-Kansas." is printed. To the right of the image "Works and Studios Arlington, N.J. Littleton, N.H. Washington D.C." is printed. On the reverse "We asre standing on the American side of this river and looking S. W. across and up the stream. These are teh American Falls hurrying by under our eyes to make their plunge of 165 feet to the rocks below. The irregular curve of the precipice over which they plunge measures 2060 feet between us and theat narrow vertical line of dark rock straight ahead at the left'; the rock is Luna Island and just beyond it the foaming, sparkling mass of the Luna Falls shows up brilliantly this side of the Goat Island. There are fine views in both directions from Goat Island. Then at the fight of the dark trees on the island there is the enormous curve of the Horsehoe Falls, where the floods that pour over break into snowy whiteness and send back into the upper air drifting clouds of iridescent mist and spray. Over 3000 feet that great horsehoe curve reaches around from Goat island to the Canadian shore there at the right, and all the way the floods are sweeping down with such enormous force as steadily to wear off the face of the supporting cliff in triver-bed. Recoreds show that the Horsehoes Falls are in this way working back up lake Erie at the rate of nearly five feet a year. Down there on the dizzy, swirling eddies 167 feet below our stand on Prospect Point is the stauneh little steamer The Maid of the Mist, heading for the base of the great Horseshoe. She is freighted with sight-seers making "the trip fo their lives." See Niagra Through the Stereoscope, with special "keyed" maps of river and islands, published by Underwood & Underwood.
