9234, Geography - Vitrate is located near Lima, in the west central section of Pru.
Producta and Industries - It has been found that Chinese laborers are the most reliable for work on cotton plantation. They receive senty cents, silver, per quintal (100 pounds) and they average two quintals a day. An expert picker will gather three quintals per day on the first crop of the season. On the second crop the laborers recieve one dollar, silver, per quintal, because this crop is harder to pick. The cotton grown here is of medium grade, such as is used in the manufacture of coarse muslins and rought cotton goods.
Agriculture - This district is in the rainless desert portion of South America, so that extensive irrigation is necessary. Without it, not even a blade of grass will grow. However, in this climate, two very good crops may be harvested each year. The first crop is, of course, superior in quality and quantity to the second.
Nature Study - We can see here the soft, white downy fibre which surrounds the seeds in bolls of the plant. It is this part of the plant for which it is principally cultivated, although the seeds are also valubable. The boll reaches maturity in six or seven weeks, when the outer surface contracts and exposes the nut ready for picking. This process is always done by hand, just as the laborers are doing here. The only machines that have been introduced have been found impracticable because they do not pick clean and take a good deal of the stem and leaves with them.
