Description

A Chief doll, Plains Native American, probably Sioux. The doll has tan leather face, tunic, and leggings. His clothing is fringed and decorated with blue, red, yellow beadwork. He has a fancy, hand painted feather headress with red satin-like fabric covering the base of each feather. A beaded headcovering at the sides of his head is covered with 5/8" diameter beaded circle designs at the ear area. There is an red old trade cloth loin cloth (edged with gold cotton) hangs at front and back from waist. A smaller red old trade cloth hanging collar is at neck, and a 3/4" rosette is at center front of tunic. Approximately 14" tall from tip of feathers to feet. Donor states that the doll's long dark hair is buffalo hair. The doll's face is beaded and painted. Donor states that the face painting was done at a later date. Update 2013: From label- "This chief doll is meant to help children learn about how adults act. Toys like this also teach children what values matter to their tribe".
