In the closing months of the war the Germans retreat was often so sudden that they were obliged to leave behind great quantities of materials. Here at Soupier, where a hasty evacnation was made necessary by the Allies, are great stocks of equpiment. There is a large pile of rifles yonder; nearer us to the right a pile of clohting, nearer still are helmets and barbed wire, etc., and cases of small ammunition around. Imagine this scene on a hundred times greate scale and you would have a more accurate picture of what the German retreat revealed in such towns as Soupier. That a struggle has taken place over this ground is easily observed by the buildings and debris and shell holes which are everywhere about. These French soldier are making an inventory of these materials, which are part of their spoils. Besides the enormous quantities of material which the Germans had to leave behind in their retreat, the Armistice provided that additonal supplies were to be turned over the victores. Huge quantities of rifles, trench helmets, artillery pieces, etc., were brought by the Germans to certain designated points. The Allies, of course, took these precautions to provide against another outbreak.
