Rans Baker lecture given at Ventling Center in 2000. The story begins in Benton, famous for its short life and many murders. A young man named Charley Maxwell is murdered by John Kelly, AKA "Jack " or "Red'. After Kellys' escape from custody and many bribes, the Rocky Mountain Detective Association in Denver was hired by Charley's father. N. K. Boswell took the case and pursued Mr. Kelly. Involved stories of capture and attempted rescues follow. One bribery recipient was Charles E. Wilson. He set up a law practice in Rawlins Springs in 1869. Colorful stories of his corrupt practices follow. Two bondsmen, J. C. Friend and E. W. Bennett were stuck with his bond after he fled "East" out of Territorial Courts Jurisdiction to avoid prosecution. His deeds cast serious doubts on Carbon Countys' Courts for years. (note: there are several copies of this lecture, some are working copies, with the final edition first in file.)
