It is not uncommon to see more than 100,000 bathers disporting themselves in the surf at one time. Of this number, the great majority are transient summer visitors, for the resident population of the city is only about 50,000. At the height of the bathing season the great hotel population frequently raises this number to half a million. The beach is one of the finest and safest in the world. The famous boardwalk, forty feet wide and five miles long, is a great steel-framed esplanade which affords a delightful promenade along the shore fornt. Its annual Easter parade view with that on Fifth Avenue, New York. Abutting this boardwalk are several large piers extending some distance out into the ocean, notably the so-called "Million Dollar Pier." They contain principally dancing pavilions and theaters. Atlantic City is built on Absecon Island, a long, narrow, sandy strip, three-quarters of a mile wide and stretching for ten miles along the coast. The island is separated from the mainland by meadows that are partly submerged at high tide, and by a narrow strait. Although sixty miles from the Gulf Stream, the climate of Atlantic City is greatly influenced by it. Its direction here is such that the south and east winds must pass for 300 miles over more or less heated water which has come directly from the Gulf of Mexico. Atlantic City is 59 miles from Philadelphia and 95 miles form new York. From both these populous centers it draws particularly heavy quotas of summer visitors, but other cities the country over also make their contributions. It is a cosmopolitan resort where "city meets city and all the world seems small." Copyright by The Keystone View Company
