MONUMENT CIRCLE, INDIANAPOLIS, IND.
When in 1824, Indianapolis became the capital of the new state of Indiana, it was little more than a georgraphical point fixed by surveys in the midst of a level plain surrounded by gently rolling, beautifully wooded hills. But as a capital site is had the unusual advantage of lying almost exactly in the geographical center of the state. Thus in later years it became easy for the whole rich commonwealth of Indiana to contribute to the growth of this attractive and well-built city, which is not only its captial but in every sense its metropolis. With a population of 382,000 in 1928 and a value of manufactured products in 1925 of $344,925,000, Indianapolis ranked twnety-first in population and sixteenth in value of manufacturing among the cities of the United States. It is also one of the greatest railroad centers of the conutry and is without rival as a terminal of interuban electric lines.
The splendid Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument, which we see in the center of monument Circle, is perhaps the finest Civil War memorial in the country. It was built by the state after designs by Bruno Schmidt, rises 285 feet above the street, and is surmounted by a figure of Victory 38 feet high. The great stone groups of Peace and War at the base of the pedestal are very spirited and the fountains below are among the largest in existence, with a capacity of 20,000 gallons of water per minute. The American Legion maintains its national headquarters in Indianapolis, and from our position we see in the distance at the right the fine Wolrd War memorial erected by the state of Indiana. A very handsome Scottish Rite cathedral, built by Masonic fraternity, also stands in Indianapolis.
