On the reverse the following is printed: 144 - (29564) CHICAGO FROM AN AIRPLANE You are looking from an airplane down upon the chief buisness section of Chicago. You can see that Chicago is located on a plain along the shore of Lake Michigan. Lake Michigan helps this city in at least three ways. The drinking water for its millions of people comes from the lake. Parks along the shore, all made of filled-in land, like Grant Park which you see in this view, give the people pleasant, cool places in which to rest and play in summer. Part of that great pier, reaching for nearly half a mie out into the water, is for amusement purposes and is owned by the city. The third way in which Lake Micigan aids Chicago is a very important one. Hundreds of freight boats loaded with package freight, lumber, grain, coal, limestone, and iron ore reach this greatest lake port by way of the lake. Just this side of the municipal pier you can see the Chicago River. Many freight boats eneter this river for, with its branches, it forms one of the harbors of Chicago. In the foreground is the South Branch of the Chicago River. Notice the bridges over it. Although the bridges lift up, or open, still they hinder traffic. Therefore many large freight boats use Chicago's other outer harbors. Warehouses and factories can be seen along the banks of the South Branch. You can see the Illinois Central railroad yards in the view. Chicago is the greaest railroad center in the world so it must have many such yards. Only a small part of Chicago is shown here. The city extends more than twenty miles along the lake shore and is about nine miles from east to west.
