MARKET STREET AND THE BAY FROM TWIN PEAKS. SAN FRANCISO, CALIF.
You are looking down market Street, the chief business street of San Francisco. The water in the distance is San Francisco Bay and across it are Oakland and Berkely. San Francisco Bay is one of the finest harbors in the world. If has a narrow entrance called the Golden Gate. It is surrounded by land high enough to keep out the hard winds. It is large enough so that hundreds of ships can anchor safely. With such a harbor you woucl expect San Francisco to be a commercial city and so it is.
Ships from many lands anchor at the wharves that extend for eight miles along the city shores. Jute from India is unloaded. That goes to the factories that make bags. Tea from China and Japan fills another wharf. Sugar from Hawaii is being unloaded and will soon be in one of the near-by refineries. The outgoing ships carry lumber, grain, fruit, and other products of our West. They go to our own cities and to South America, the Pacific islands, and countries across the Pacific. Many ferries dock at the Ferry Building, at the far end of Market Street. These ferries carry passengers and freight from Oakland, where several railroads have their terminals, to San Francisco.
The history of San Francisco has been full of adventure. It was a sleepy Spanish village in 1848 when gold was discovered. The gold rush turned it into a city in a few days - a city full of the worst as well as good men. Years later came a terrible earthquake, followed by one of the worst fires in history. A new and finer city was soon built. Today this beautiful city has much to attract tourists and thousands visit it every year.
