On the reverse the following is printed: 242-(26464) BAND SAW CUTTING REDWOOD LOG, CALIFORNIA This enormous log was once the trunk of a stately tree such as you can see in view No. 229. It took hundreds and hudnreds of years for it to grow to tis present size. It looked proud and stately standing there in the forest, but some men felt that it coule be of more value to mankind, so they chopped it down, hauled it to this mill, and are having it cut up into boards. These boards or lumber, as it is called, will next appear in our homes as furniture, as playthings for the children, fuel for the stove or furnace, houses to live in or boxes in which goods are shipped all over the world. Some people dislike to cut down a tree. There is a little poem entitled, "Woodman, Spare That Tree." Others feel that the many things made from the wood of trees contribute so much to man's welfare that it is all right to cut them down. How do you feel about this? Aside from being a beautiful and interesting sight, what other purposes do trees serve in the world.? This saw is what is called a band saw. It is like a steel belt with sharp teeth in one edge. It runs over and around two pulleys that are revolving very rapdilby. The log is on a carrier or platform that pushs the end of the log against the saw, and so on through the entire length of the log. Notice how wide that board is by comparing it to the height of the man on the right. These band saws work more rapidly and are easier to keep in shape than the older type of circular saw. A ciruclar saw large enough to cut a log like this would habe to be approximately 12 feet in diameter. Copyright by The Keystone View Company
