This present sutructure replaced the original church destoryed in 1716. It was completed at a cost of about $200,000.00 and was dedicated in 1736. At that time it was considered one of the finest buildings in Mexico City. The City of Mexico lies about a thousand miles in a driect line southeast from El Paso. It has a population of approximately half a million, and is situated in a beautiful valley surrounded by mountains. Centuries ago proud Aztec chieftains trod the ground on which the traveler stands as he views this old church. The Cathedral of the City of Mexico, one of the largest churches in America, stand on the site of the ancient temple of Huitzilopochtli, the titulr god of the Aztexs, and Montezuma, the ill fated Aztec prince who was so treacherously put to death by Cortez, had his summer palace on the hill of Chapultepee almost three miles from the city. The ground on which we stand has been the scene of many bitter stuggles. The Aztecs were practically destroyed by the cruelties of Spanish domination. Three centuries later Spain in turn was driven from the country and a republic was formed. In 1847 the city was captured by United States forces, and in 1863 by an army from France. Since then, frequent insurrections have drenched the streets in blood. But a settled government now seems to be established, and this beautiful city may hope for an unborken period of prosperty and development. Copyright by The Keystone View Company
