V12640
A PROSPEROUS FARMER, COUNTY KERRY, IRELAND
We are in the southwest corner of Ireland. Only a few miles away at the east are the famous Lakes of Killarney where Ross Castle and Muckross Abbey and the "Meeting of the Waters" delight every soul with any love for beauty or for the legends of the Middle Ages.
Just here there is little reminder of the fierce old fighting kinds and lords. The serene present makes a charming scene of its own. Not all the Kerry people live as comfortably as this. There is not a great amount of tillable and pasture land and the little there is has to be divided into so many very small holdings as to reduce the peasant farmer's income to a pitifully low figure. This man and his buxom wife are lucky ones, endowed both with more capital and more scientific intelligence than the rank-and-file of the community. These well-buildt, prolific cows and the fat, quizzical looking donkeys are the pride of his heart. She takes particular credit to herself for the flock of plump geese, for she has watched over their career ever since the mothers of them laid the eggs from which they were hateched. No tumbledown chimenys here, nor leaky roofs, nor sagging hinges. That thatch of straw is almost as neat and smooth as the matron's hair and the sonte walls are quite as white as her apron.
Sturdy ambitious lads go away from these snug little Irish homes all over the world - they are dominion builders in Canada, Asutralia, and New Zealand, they are makers of political and commercial life in America, they are sailor boys seeing ever land and sky. But Ireland is always a peculiarly dear land to her warm-heated children.
