THE PLONLEIN, ROTHENBURG, GERMANY
The traveler in western Europe gain one of his most valuable experiences front observing the wide differences in manners, customs and architecture which exist in the many countries and among the diverse peoples occupying, in the aggregate, an area less than half that of the United States. Many more points of difference may be found, for example, between three European towns lying almost withen sight of one another but separated by the boundaries of three different nations, than would exist between three American towns of similar size situated respectively in Maine, Missouri and Oregon.
Such a place as rothenburg-ob-der-Tauber could exist nowhere save in central Germany, for its picturesque architecture is the product of ideas and influences which were peculiar to that region in centuries long since gone. It is a sleepy little city of about 9,000 people, still surrounded by its mediaeval walls , towers and gates. It possesses many curious old houses such those we see, and a beautiful Town Hall, part of which dates from the year 1240 while another portion, built in 1575, is of elaborate Renaissance design. The extraordinarily picturesque scene before us, which seems almost as if meant for a stage setting, is a parting of the ways called the Plonlein, in one of the main streets of Rothenburg. The street rising toward the lett leads through the Sieber Tower to the outer walls of the city. while the one the right desends through the Kobollseller Tower into the valley of the River TauberCollection
