Vienna, the capital of the Austrian Republic and before the Wolrd War capital of the Austira-Hungarian Empire, is one of the world's great cities. In its day of power, with a population of more than 2,000,000,000. in the midst of Austria's busiets industrial regions, it was the natural center of commerce for that empire. It commanded the trade of the Danube, and it was situated at the intersection of two great railway routes, the one from Paris and Berlin to Constantinople, and the other from Rome to St. Petersburg. With mining and agricultural wealth also tributary to the capital, it was in a fortunate position. Much of this material advantage has passed away. With the break-up of the old emprie, Austria has become a small country, with not enough population, industry and productivity to support a capital of such size and opulence. The court life and the gaiety fo the titled aristocracy are no more, but the natural beautifes of the city remain - the splendor of the architecture, the art, the music, the science. We are looking north. The older part of Vienna is at the east. Before 1857 a line of defence walls encircled the old "inner" city. These were torn down and the space thus gained was turned into a long, irregular series of avenues, airy, sunshiny and green. Practically all the handsome buildings in sight now have been erected since then. That building at the left with the Greek portico is the Parliament House. The Gothic building with the splendid tower is the City Hall. The big, broad structure at the father side of the park is the home of Vienna's ancient University, itself in existence since 1365. The building opposite the City Hall is the Court Theater. Copyright by The Keystone View Company
