PEASANT TYPES IN RURAL VILLAGE IN RUSSIA
In a country so vast as Russia, and whre conditionsare in such a radical state of change, it is impossible to make broad general statements and feel sure they are accurate. European Russia, as we know it, is almost as large as the Untied States, and Siberia tiwce that size. In the turmoil that followed the Revolution new countries were carved out of the ancient empire almost over night, and new governmental ideas are still in the making. Industry and edcuation, agrituclture and commerce all had to take their place in the new regime.
That same vastness, however, and the characteristics of the land and of the people, are not the thing that change suddenly. The Russian peansant and the Russian village remain and for a long time will remain as they have been for so many centuries. The mass of the people cannot read and write and education will be slow to extend. The people are sturdy, able to endure hardhships, and frugal perfoce, because they have never had real prosperity as Americans know it. But their country is rich in natural resources hardly touched yet for borad develoment, and with their bodily vigor and grugality, it seems certain that some day, as conditions enlighten them, they will take a much more definite place in world affairs.
Village life in Russia is simple in the extreme, even primitive, and such communitieis have little in common with the American smal town and its up-to-date people and conditions.
