V14627
THE ETERNAL CITY FROM THE DOME OF ST. PETER'S, ROME, ITALY
We are in the dome of the largest Christian church in the world, looking east over the piazza or square of St. Peter, and across the Tiber River toward the Campagna, that looks so hazy in the distance. The greater part of the city, including the Forum, lies farther to our right - toward the south. That large circular building straight ahead of us, just this side of the three arched bridge, is the Castle of St. Angelo, though it was originally built many years ago by Hadrian, one of the Emperors of ancient Rome, and for centuries was Hadrian's tomb. That large building just beyond is the Palce of Justice of Court House. Now glance farther to the right, and if you look sharply you will see the small, low, rounded dome of the famous Pantheon, and about half way between the Pantheon and the Palace of Justice, but a little farhter away, is the Royal Palcae on the Quirinal, one of the seven hills of ancient Rome.
It would be impossible to mention in so short a space even the more important of the many historical events that have been enacted in the city that lies before us. Let us for a moment forget the bloody tragedies that have been enacted along the Tiber; yes, even down there is St. Angelo Castle, and on that old bridge; and let us think of such as Raphael, who lived in a house that stood down there where that splendid colonnade ends on the left, while he painted some of the world's masterpieces for this very temple. The very dome in which we stand is the work of the great Michelangelo. Study the splendid proportions of the architecture, and revel in teh glories of the great masters who here wrought.
