PICTURESQUE BEAUTY OF AN OLD FARMHOUSE NEAR LEMONA, SPAIN
This is in the fruitful wine producing valley of the Nervion river, in northern Spain. The house is an old one, and evidently more picturesque than convenient. The steps, partly of stone and parlty of wood, are so many as to indicate that ease in woman's work is not considered important in this part of Spain. The rudely yoked oxen and the simple harrow are evidence that man, too, works at disadvantage. The rambling house has one fine feature - this is the neat, wicker-woven window box filled with flowers. There is a glimpse at thse side of the vine, which is the wealth of this region.
Someone has said that of all the charms in Spanish country life, the most pleasing are the faces of these country people. They are intelligent and kindly. The elderly men all look so wise. This perhaps comes from the fact that the Spaniard never recognizes difference in station. The servant has all the dignity of his master. the peasant is clean-chaven, - at least after he has made a visit to town. He has great mother wit, and is loyal to all the traditions and customs of his country. He is equally quick to resent any real or fancied slight of these by foreigners.
There is no Sunday in rural Spain. Neither are there any fixed or regular hours for work. People simply work when they can or are compelled to. A young man will work steadily for twenty-five or thirty days and then take a rest of two or three days. The older one works for shorter periods. The Spaniard shows his Moorish ancestry by his dislike for drink. though he uses coffee in quantity. Wine is used, but in samll quantities, and water is taken freely.
