January 1888
Bodies of 3 soldiers killed by Indians in the Sioux War 1864-65 brought last week from Sweetwater where they’ve lain for over 20 years. Shipped to national cemetery in Ft. McPherson, NE. All remains of soldiers buried at stage stops and small posts to be moved there. (1/7/88 p. 3)
Stable on South Side property of C.F. Perkings White River Stage caught fire from stove pipe in driver’s room. Building, hay, grain, harness and 4 head of horses lost. Fire Dept. on hand promptly. Perkins losses $1,000. Mr. Middleton, driver, lost all clothing $50, his hands burned from trying to save horses. (1/7/88 p. 3)
Col. R.H. Wilbur shipped to Ft. McPherson the remains of 3 soldiers from the 11th Ohio volunteer cavalry that had been disinterred at old Sweetwater Bridge. James Averell has a government contract to take up the remains of all soldiers buried on Sweetwater that can be identified. These three are: Samuel Maddox, Ira A. Grossman, and Nicholas K. Day – probably killed in 1863. (1/14/88)

C.F. Perkins, Dixon merchant and mail contractor, laid up with small pox. He was in Denver on business when stricken. He came home sick and then broke out in a few days. Caused great consternation among settlers on river. Prompt measures taken. Great many exposed. Vaccines and other preservatives taken out on stage. Every precaution taken. (1/23/89 p. 3)

Col. George W. Durant, administrator of Ella Watson’s estate, sues A.J. Bothwell and John Durbin for $1,000, the value of her cattle they took from her corral. 40 head in corral at time of lynching. Coroner claims he should have been allowed to take charge of them but “B&D” drove them off and sold the “mavericks” in Rawlins in the name of Wyo. Stockgrowers Assoc.. Mathewson scammed him on some sheep, brown disappeared, but not enough evidence to pin it on Mathewson
