AN EQUATORIAL SUNRISE OFF COAT OF JAVA
Seldom is it given the travele to see such glorious cloud effects as those in the scene before us. The Dawn of Creations, it seems, the birth of a new day, as the sun leaps above the horizon, flooding sky and sea with radiance. Beneath us the clear and shallow waters of the Java sea, as yet but faintly illuminated by the dawning day; above us the glory of the sky; around us the soft and balmy breeze of early morn in the tropics.
As the clouds melt away under the rays of the equatorial sun the sea will assume marvelous tints. All the colors of Nature's palette will unfold themselves to the eye. The ocean will become a well of molten gold. Violet will merge into indigo, sapphire into green, orange into crimson, and the waters will heave and swell heavily, as liquid lead. The traveler who sees the sun rise on a tropic sea will never forget it.
To the south is the island of Java, an island of volcanic peaks, some of which rise 12,000 feet and are clothed in perpetual green to the very summit ; an island of dense forests, fetile plains, beautiful valleys, deep gorges and rushing streams. The plains are covered with flowers, the villages concealed beneath green foliage, the air fragrant with the scent of innumerable blossoms. Jungle fowl scream shrilly in the forests, kingfishers flash above the streams, minaret flycatchers flutter like jets of flame in the bushes. The call of innumerable feathered creatrues assails the ear on every side, while now and then terrific rains fall, thunder peals and lightining flahses in an intermittent pyrotechnical display.
