On the reverse the following is printed: 16418 A TROPICAL PARADISE - THE EDEN-LIKE ISLAND OF JAVA This whole view from ountains of considerable height gives the appearance of a richly varied and well-watered garden, enlivened with many villages mingled with fields of the richest verdure. Here are tints of the brightest hue. In the hottest season the air still holds its freshness because fo the many rills and revulets. These the mountain farmer carefully directs into endless canals to irrigate the land which he has carefully laid out in plots to receive it. The soil of Java, though in many parts neglected, is noted for the abundance and variety of its products. With the tropical sunshine to ripen them it has all the fruits of a tropical climate; while in many parts the mountains give a climate like that of the temperate zone. The bamboo, without which the Javanese would hardly know how to build a house, grows in abundance. The coconut, sugar-cane, cotton and coffee flourish here, and yield products of the best quality. Indigo, tea and tobacco are also planted for export. Rice is the great food staple of the Javanese. It covers the slopes of the mountains and the low fields, giving a return of forty or fifty fold. Maize, or even wheat and rye may be cultivated. For their own use, the people also cultivate yams and cassava. The fertility of the soils is so great that after yielding two or even three crops in the year it is not ncessary to ferilize or even to change the culture. Thus this garden island owes its richness almost equally to nature and to a people who are trying to do their part. Copyright by The Keystone View Company
