ACROSS MILFORD SOUND, WEST COAT OF NEW ZEALAND
In this region, the Southern Alps, which line the entire west coast of South Island, rear mighty pinnacles of rock to the sky. Snow lies forever in the fissures and gullies which seam their rugged sides. Glaciers extend to within a few hundred feet of the borad Pacific. Milkwhite torrents pour from green arches of solid ice at their base and tumble in dazzling cascades to the sea. Avalanches thunder from the cliffs. Huge segmens and innumerable fragments of rock, loosened by frost and wind, litter the sides of these mighty peaks. Gloomy caverns, into which no ray of sunlight ever penetrates, warn the traveler away. Waterfalls, shining in the sun, pour over lofty cliffs, their deep toned roar muffled in mist which rises from the rocks below, swaying and sparkling like an iridescent veil in the wnds that sweep those gloomy gorges. here nature is sublime.
In grandeur and majesty these New Zealand Alps rival those of switzerland and France: th same lofty, cloud-capped and snow-covered peaks; the same wild confusion of splintered rock; the same seamed and crevassed glaciers, trending with imperceptible motion ever downwards, carving deep canyons in the living rock. This is a land which delights the traveler's eye and stirs his imagination, a land which brings him closer to nature's God.
