THE HOME OF THE CHILD JESUS - NAZARETH, PALESTINE
Half way between the Mediterranean and the Sea of Galilee, and sicty-five miles from Jerusalem, on he steep slope of a braod valley lies the little town Nazareth, where Jesus lived and grew to manhood. The guides will show you mary's house and Joseph's workshop, but none of these sites are authentic, as the old town of Jesus' day was destoryed and later rebuilt farther down the slope. Yet the boy Jesus must have seen the same hills girdling the same lovely valley, and from the hill tops he must have looked far out over Galilee, one of the very finest views in all Palestine. Wells are scarce in that coutnry, so Jesus and his mother were, very probably, frequent visitors at the same springs which are still flowing and are now sacred spots.
As we are looking southwest, the distant mountain, dimly seen over the ridge at the left, must have be part of the Carmel range. Do you see the road below on the left, which leads directly to the town? A short distance down that road, but hidden from our sight by buildings, is the Fountain of the Virgin. That open field, oval in shape, containing a few olive trees, is the Mohammedan cemetery; on the right is another field of olives where toruists camp. The group of buildings just in front of us, on the right of the road leading to the town, belongs to the Russian Greeks; beyond the cemetery is the Moselm quarter; the Roman Catholics are on the hillside still farther away.
Nazareth's population is now about 10,000, most of whom are Christians. Thousands of pilgrims from all over the world come here every year, especially at Easter time.
