LOOKING WEST FROM THE WASHINGTON MONUMENT TO THE LINCOLN MEMORIAL, WASHINGTON, D.C.
Turning now th the W., we look along the extension of the Mall, reaching to the shore of the Potomac which lies in the distance. Near yb, apparently almost at our feet, is the gracefull pool of the Rainbow Fountain and beyond it the long quadrangle of the Reflecting Basin. The rows of low, parallel structures at the extreme right are parts of the enormous Munitions Buildings. It was put up by the government during the World War, together with the Navy Building, adjoining it, and the two are used by the War and Navy Departments. But the object which draws our attention irresistably is the Lincoln Meorial reared like a superb Greek temple on an eminence at the extemity of the Reflecting Basin, its chaste outlines mirrored in the placid water. This magnificent National tribute to the memory of Abraham Lincoln, centereing exactly on a line with the Washington Monument and the dome of the Capitol, was completed and dedicated in 1922, and it is eplete with allegory. It is constructed entirely of white Colorado marble and a broad stairway of 13 steps, typifying the 13 original states, ascends to the top of the rectangular base, which is 188 ft. long by 118 ft. wide. Upon this base stands a Doric colonnade of 36 columns, symbolizing the number of states in the Union at the time of Lincoln's death. The columns and the inner wall support a roof decorated with 48 festoons by which are represented the states of today. The features of the Memorial which are personal to Lincoln we shall have an opportunity to inspecte more closely a little later.
