The Brooklyn Bridge spans the East River and connects the boroughs of Manhattan and Brooklyn. It was begun in 1870 and opened for traffic in 1883. It is suspended by four cables, each about fifteen inches in diameter. They consist of bundles of galvanized steel wires which have been subjected to the severest tests of strength. These cables rest upon two towers each 278 feet high. The foundations of these towers, where they must withstand the coninutal rush and wear of current and tides, are solid masses of masonry 140 feet by 59 feet. The length of the river span between the towers is 1600 feet, while the total distance, including the bridge approaches on either side, is nearly one and one-quarter miles. The central span, shown so clearly in this picture, is 135 feet above the water and 595 feet long. The structure is 85 feet in width and has trolley tracks, railroad tracks, roadways and a pathway. The cost of the construction was about fifteen million dollars. It represents great engineering skill and daring. The New York Terminus where now we find shops and factories, was at one time a residence district. In 1789, while the first Congress was in session, George Washington lived in a house standing where one of the bridge piers now rests. That was at a time when old Manhattan had only about 33,000 inhabitants. Copyrigh by The Keystone View Company
