On the reverse the following is printed: V23219 AQUARIUM AND LIBERTY STATUE IN HARBOR, NEW YORK CITY Lat. 40 (Degrees) N.; Long. 74 (Degrees) W. In this picture we are looking southeast from the southern end of Manhattan Island, down New York harbor toward Staten island. The harbor of New York, which is known as upper New York Bay, is one of the finest in the world and covers about 25 square miles. It connects with the lower Bay by a strait called the Narrows. The most conspicuous object in the Upper Bay is the Statue of Liberty seen in the distance. It is situated on Bedloe's Island and is built on a base 155 feet high. It is a colossal bronze figure of a woman, 151 feet in height, holding aloft a torch which is lighted at night by electricity. In the foreground of this picture is Battery Park, so called becasue it was fortified in the 17th century for protection of the town. The large circular building down at the water's edge is the famous Castle Garden. It was built in 1807 and was called Castle Clinton during the Revoluitonary War. It was leased by the city in 1822 and converted into a public assembly room where civic functions were held. In 1855 it was leased by the State Board of Immigration an served as a landing place and temporary headquarters for immigrants. In 1890 it was ceded to the city authorityies, and under the jurisdiction of the Department of Public Works it has been equipped as a large public aquarium with over one hundred tanks and a large collection of both salt and freshwater fish. It is probably the finest collection of this sort in the world. Pumps circulate 300,000 gallons of salt water daily and in winter this is heated for the tropical fishes.
