BLOWING A CARBOY, GLASS WORKS, NEW JERSEY
In this picture we see a portion of the interior of a glass factory. The process of manufacturing glass is intensely interesting. One can hardly imagine that sand, soda, lime, and lead can be changed into the clear and transparent glass. These materials are mixed into what is techincally called the "batch," and subjected to a great heat unitl the substance is pliable. Then different processes are used for making the various kinds of glass, such as window glass, optical glass, and so on. Making carboys, or large bottles by the hand-blowing process is whown in our picture. the glass is first gathered on th eend of the long blow pipe. The man at the left of the picture is the "blower," who is shaping the carboy. The shaped ball is then cooled and more glass is added to it. After it is enlraged it is passed on to the final blower, pictured at the right, who blows it and shapes its base to conform to a mold. Mechanical blowers have been invented which have, to a great extend changed the glass industry. These machine blowers automatically dip a long pipe inot th emoltn glass and raise it agin. As the pipe rises, the glass is pulled upward and a constant stream of air flowing through the pep causes the glass to assume a cylindrical form.
Glass blowing is one of the most ancient industries. Tombs of the Egyptians dating back to 4000 B. C. show glass blowers at work.
