On the reverse the following is printed: V23221 HORSESHOE CURVE, ALLEGHENY MOUNTAINS, PA. Lat. 40 (Degrees) N.; Long. 78 (Degrees) W. The Pennsylvania R. R. passes through scenes of wondrous beauty, as it winds its way across the Allegheny Mountains from Harrisburg to Pittsburg. The picturesque views of the mountains are alternated with delightful glimpses of the Jaunita, Conemaugh, and Mononghela Rivers. This picutre was taken near Altoona, Pa., where the great locomotive and car manufactories of the Pennsylvania Railroad are located. The Horseshow Curve is a marvelous piece of engineering skill. It was an enormous undertaking to construct this loop. Slices have been cut off the mountain sides, and a cuvert drains the heights and brings the floods of the mountain streams down to the reservoir within the curve, which is a part of Altoona's water supply. It is in such extraordinary piece of enginering as this that America is leading today, and her railroad work in difficult places is finding its way into all parts of the world. This is the last -ong pull in getting over the top of the Alleghenies. The last height is only five miles est in a straight line, but about twice as far by rail. The train is on the west side of the bend, and it is west bound, though just now it is headed nearly southeast. The little station opposite is Kittanning Point, and Altoona is just beyond the mountain at the right. Copyright by The Keystone View Company.
