On the reverse the following is printed: 23293 HOME OF WASHINGTON, MT. VERNON Lat. 39 (Degrees) N.; Long. 77 (Degrees) W. Mt. Vernon was a part of the estate granted by England in 1670 to George Washington's grandfather. Washington, himself, was living here when he recieved word of his election as President of the United States. It is situated in Fairfax County, Virginia, on the right bank of the Potomac River, about fifteen miles from Washington, D. C. The old mansion which is shown in this iew is on a picturesque plateau five hundred feet above the river. It is of wood, cut and painted to look like stone. It is two stories high, nintety-six feet long and thirty feet deep. A high Plazza runs along the front of the house. There are six rooms of moderate size on the ground floor. It was built in 1743 by Lawrence Washington, a brother of George, and was named Mt. Vernon after Admiral Vernon, an officer in the British navy. It came into the hands of John A. Washington, who, in 1858 sold it with six acres of land to the Ladies' Mt. Vernon Association. This association restored the hosue and is keeping it in a state of preservation as a lasting memorial to the first President of the United states, and as a place of national interest. it contains many Washingtonian relics and objects of national interest. The old tomb, containing thremains of Washington and his wife stands near a wooded ravine a few hundred yards from the house. Copyright by The Keystone View Company
