LOOKING ACROS WASHINGTON CHANNEL TO THE BUREAU OF ENGRAVING AND PRINTING, WASHINGTON, D. C.
Not least of the charms of Washington is the ease with which one can go from the magnificence of palatial buildings and the bewildering walth of crowded interiors to the grateful tranquility of tree-shaded lawns, flower beds brilliant with bloom, and stretches of water, placid or wind-rippled beneath the sunshine and the drifting clouds. Thus we have now come by a pleasant walk thorugh the Mall, past the buildings of the Agricultural Department and the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, and over the bridge at the outlet of the Tidal Basin, to the N. edge of East potomac Park where it overlooks Washington Channel. From the top of the Washington monument we saw this park, stretching southward in the distance, like an island living in the Potomac. Now we are standing within it, looking N. W. toward the Monument, with the Bureau of Engraving and Printing lying between. Along the opposite shore, to the right of our point of view, are the shipping and steamboat wharves, including those of the lines which ply to Mount Vernon, to Norfolk, and to Baltimore. Seen from this position, the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, which is a branch of the Treasury Department, is obviously only a great and wll-consturcted modern factory building. But its front, facing toward our left, has the facade of massive columns and the monumental entrance steps necessary to harmonize it with other government buildings. its chieft interest, however, centers upon the work carrid on within, which includes the engraving and printing of all Government paper moneys and securities, postage and revenue stamps, Treasury warrants passprots, and pension and patent certificates.
