ANTHONY FALLS, MINN. Lat. 45 (Degrees) N.; Long. 93 (Degrees) W. Minnesota ranks first among the wheat producing states of the country, in both acreage and production. This is largely due to its excellent water power and facilities of transportation. This picture shows the famous St. Anthony Falls, which have done much toward the development of the cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, and the state as a whole. These falls, in the Mississippi River, are eighteen feet high, or, including the rapids, fifty feet. Until the close of the eighteenth century, millsontes were used for grinding, and are still common in small custom mills or grist mills. Then rollers were substituted for the stones in the grinding process. In 1822 the first saw mill was erected at St. Anthony Falls and a few years later was fitted up to frind flour. The first merchant mill was estblished at Minneapolis in 1854. A merchang mill is a large manufacturing establishment with supplies the home market, and exports flour to foreign countires. About 1870 the method of grinding with iron rollers was installed in one of the great flour mills of Minneapolis. Then the porcelain rollers wer used. Finally the big flour mill such as seen in this picture came into existence. The total capacity for grain storage in Minneapolis is thirty million bushels. The mills have a daily capacity of 7,000 barrels of flour. Thirty-eight grain elevators are necessary to handle the enormous quantities of grain used here. You may go around the world and find Minneapolis flour in every large city. It is sometimes called the Flour City. Its flour mills, lumbeirng and other manufactures all center around the Falls of St. Anthony, which are equal to 57,000 horse pwer. Copyright by The Keystone View Company
