The Hudson, one of the most important as well as the most beautiful river in the United States, is rich in historic interest. It was discovered in 1854 by Verrazano and explored by Henry Hudson in 1609. Because of tis strategic position, it played an important part in the American Revolution. It was the scene of the battles of Harlem Heights, Stony Point and Peekskill and it was here that Burgoyne carried on his important compaign. On the banks of the Hudson, about fifty miles from New York City, is situated the United States military academy of West Point. It was a military position in the Revoutionary War. West Point is in one of the most beautiful spots of the picturesque Hudson, where the river winds through the Highlands. The reservation covers more than 3,000 acres. The buildings are grouped on 200 acres of land, about 175 feet above the river. The military academy was first styarted here in 1866. The chief buildings are the officers' quarters, cadet barracks, academic buildings, library, mess hall, hospital, and riding hall. Cullum Memorial Hall, a large and handsome building made possible through a bequest of a former superintendent, contains interesting relics and trophies of the wars in which this country has been engaged. The discipline is very strict. Grant, Sherman, Lee, Stonewall Jackson, Wheeler, and many other prominent military men were educated here. Newburg, where the Continental army disbanded, is only a few miles above this point, and on the same side of the river. The old fashioned hosue, which was Washington's headquarters here, is in full view of the river. Copyright by The Keystone View Company
